Filing on to the Fruit stage to the euphoric sounds of ‘Hong Kong’ by Mauro Picotto, the movement is punctuated by poses held like silhouettes, morphing into something more fluid and rhythmic. Danza! is back 26th November for its fifth year, bringing small-scale dance performance to the intimate and laid-back setting of Hull’s Fruit Space.
Danza! was set up in 2011 by dance artist and choreographer Jo Ashbridge in order to provide an alternative to the large-scale dance productions at the city’s Hull Truck Theatre.
It has grown each year in terms of size, quality and engagement, and always incorporates a participatory element for local dancers in the form of a choreography project led by Jo herself. This year that will be inspired by a summer project held by Hull Dance, who also support the event as part of their wider programme of activities, that saw world renowned choreographer Lea Anderson create a piece locally for performance at the Freedom Festival.
