Review: A Word Away A Short Film by Mollie Moore

A Word Away is a short documentary film that demonstrates the incredible healing power of performance poetry, directed by accomplished filmmaker Mollie Moore. Selected for the Big Sky International Film Festival 2020 in Montana, the film follows ‘Cosmo’, a South Sudanese migrant who after remaining silent for 18 years, begins to tell his story.  Continue reading

Borders, binders, bad behaviour and ballet at Austrian film fest

Short film fans watched 5 very different films at the Austrian Short Film Festival at Hull University last week.  Organised by Theresa Guczogi the films were screened in German with English subtitles and all were nominees at the 2018 Austrian Short Film Awards.   Continue reading

Heads Up Introducing… with Martin Green

As the lights went up in Kardomah 94, I turned to the group to my left and stared at them. I raised my hands, palms upwards beseeching them for a response. It came in the form of a bemused half-smile, I did a half-smile back. I turned my head to an older gentleman, who had been sat behind me all the while and offered him a similar gesture, accompanied by the now slightly wide-eyed look. Gong for Hull Filmmaker Sean McAllister

Last night the first ever Gong was awarded to Hull filmmaker Sean McAllister for A Syrian Love Story. The recent BAFTA nominated documentary film, was screened at Kardomah 94 to celebrate the launch of the Rank Foundation’s Gongs  a new awards event celebrating and rewarding filmmaking in the region, taking place at the city centre venue all this week.   Continue reading
