The Itch 50s/60s Record Hop at Thieving Harry’s, is the place to be in Hull. I experienced my first one Saturday 14th November courtesy of organisers Dan and Mark Richardson from Original Brew . Playing 50s and 60s rock n roll: it’s the music your parents and your grandparents listened to.
Serving up special cocktails with fruit and umbrellas, exotic lager and American pale ale in a can, there’s plenty to get you in the mood for dancing. The tone of the shabby chic decor, wing-back chairs, retro fixtures and fittings perfectly complement the rock n roll music.
It has that underground feel when you walk in, like you’ve just been granted access to an exclusive loft: for hep cats with fashions and attitude to match. There’s a couple who have been jiving for the past hour, and boy are they good. I spy another couple doing the American Slide and it’s all so groovy.
Thieving Harry’s on Humber Street is well-known for top-notch coffee and food with great views of the marina. It also serves as a unique venue for a discerning client looking alternative location for their event. It is far enough away from the city centre to not get a steady footfall passersby, so for many, going to The Itch means a special trip out: a rare treat. The Itch is not just a treat for Hull folk either: people come from miles around to share in the great atmosphere.
Did I say all the music is played on original vinyl, so you get that authentic sound and experience. It’s a little slice of rock n roll heaven here in Hull. I don’t think many could name the records played that night, it didn’t matter at all, it was all about the groove. A really different kind of night out.
In November there was a guest DJ, in the shape of Jerry Brill (pictured) who is described as having one, if not the rarest, rock n roll collection in Britain.
Here’s a taste of what you might hear at The Itch:
Carl Cherry – The Itch The Jiants – Tornado The creep – Betty Lou’s got a new tattoo the V-eights – poppas yellow tie Freddie Cannon – little bitty Corrine Al Hendrix Monkey Bite
The next The Itch 50/60s Record Hop is planned for February 2016 – before then Dan and Mark will be joining Pete Robinson to play at the Thieving Harry’s Xmas Party.
